Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for the arts from the aunt Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of the power of art as an instrument for activism. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. When she was in school, DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to look-out and search for the house for a specific Jury member. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She was hired in 1999 and established her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
